👉 When should I start thinking about switching?

It takes 14 days to switch from one provider to the next so you can initiate a switch 14 days before your contract end date without any charges by your provider. 

So if your contract ends on Dec 31 2019, around Dec 15th or 16th you should be researching new media deals and getting ready to make the switch. 

👉 How long will I be without broadband for?

Usually the changeover is speedy - you'll rarely be without broadband for more than a couple hours at the most. It might be longer if you're switching to or from a cable provider though. 

👉 What happens to my email address when I switch broadband providers?

It depends on who your provider is:

  • BT and Sky let you keep your old email indefinitely
  • Plusnet offers a mail-only package on request
  • Post Office deletes your address when you switch
  • TalkTalk lets you access your email address for 12 months, then deletes it
  • Virgin Media lets you access it for 90 days, then deletes it

👉 Can I keep my phone number?

Yes, you can keep your phone number when switching to a different broadband provider.

👉 Do I need to call my old provider to cancel?

When switching between two Openreach providers such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, or EE:

  • All you need to do is order a new package. 
  • Your new provider will take care of everything involved in the switch, including getting your current broadband cancelled. (Whoohoo!)
  • If you do the switch over the phone with the Dixons team, Dixons will cancel your contract for you. 

When switching to or from a provider on a different network such as Virgin:

  • You'll need to call up your current provider and cancel the service yourself. 👎
  • We'd recommend doing this after you've ordered a new package, so you know when your new broadband is likely to go live.
  • If you do the switch over the phone with Dixons, Dixons will confirm whether they will be cancelling for you or not.
